How to take a Taxi in Korea

Useful transportation at night

Taxi exists in every main cities around the world.
But the way to use a taxi is a little different.
Today, I'll give some tips for using a taxi in Korea!

The color of the Taxi

The color of the taxis in Seoul are usually orange,
but there's no difference between orange and other colors.

Available Taxis

A red Korean word, '빈차', means that it's available.
빈차 means 'vacant'

How to take a taxi

Raise your hand to stop a taxi

You can see taxis in a line at the places where people gather a lot.

Usually, Koreans sit in the back seat.
Korean drivers don't open door like Japanese drivers do.

Fare of the taxi

<You can check the fare in the middle of the taxi like the photo above.>

Basic fare: around 3000 won (From 12 am to 04 am: around 3600 won)
Distance fare: 100 won per 142 m

The fare of the Korean taxi is not expensive compared to other countries,
and many Koreans usually take a taxi at night.
If you take a taxi after 12 am, it's a little more expensive,
but if you move within a city, it's not that expensive.

What is Basic fare??

It's the minimum fare of the taxi.
And you can move by 2 km with basic fare,
and after 2 km, you'll be charged 100 won per 142 m.
The basic fare in Seoul is 3000 won.

"You should pay 3000 won, even if you move less than 2 Km!!"

If you move from a city to another city,
there will be an extra fare.
Since there is a fare for the highway and it's a long distance.

For the fair taxi fare,
at the Incheon airport, you can check the estimated Taxi fare, at the taxi stop.

Payment

1. Cash

<Only Korean money!>

2. T-money card

<T-money is the rechargeable card you can use when you use a taxi, bus, or subway.>

"No credit card!!"

How to tell your destination

Every Korean taxi has the navigation(GPS) system.

If you can't speak Korean,
Show your destination name or the address written in Korean.
(Korean drivers can't speak foreign language)

If you want to have a conversation with a driver

1. Use Google translator

You can express what you want to say
if you use the Google translator with your smart phone.

2. Use free interpretations in Korea

Free interpretation for taxi passenger

You can see the number of free interpretation on the window in the back seat.
(English, Chinese, Japanese)

Tourist information center

Call 1330 and you can use free translator speaking English, Chinese and Japanese.

BBB Korea

BBB Korea is the company volunteer interpreters work at.
Call 1588-5644
BBB has interpreters who can speak 19 foreign languages.

When you arrive at your destination

Pay the money with cash or T-money card.
You can check the fare on the screen of the machine in a taxi.
And you don't need to give a tip to a driver in Korea.

"No need to tip to a driver in Korea. Great, Great!!"

Jay's Tips

-Korean drivers drive very fast. (sometimes very scary)

-You could meet some unkind drivers.

-The fare of the taxi is not that expensive compared to other countries',
but it's still 3 times more expensive than the fare of the bus or subway.

-Korean women are worried when they have to take a taxi alone at night.

-If you take a taxi at the main downtown in Seoul
like Hong-Dae, Gangnam, Itaewon, ect,
you could be asked much more expensive taxi fare from the driver.
And they don't take a passenger who wants to move a short distance.
(In this case, walk away a little bit to the street where people are not crowded.
Then you can take a taxi that kind drivers drive.)

-Except for Seoul, there's no trouble taking a taxi in Korea.
